CCA News May 2008 It’s a balmy 70 degrees, the sun is shining and it’s a perfect time to visit Chincoteague Island. The Chincoteague Cultural Alliance has a wide variety of cultural and artistic events planned for May and June. For more details, visit the new and improved web site at www.chincoteagueculturalalliance.org. 2nd Saturday Art Stroll - May 10 The 2nd Saturday Art Stroll takes place from 6:00-10:00pm in CCA member shops throughout the town. Pick up printed InfoMaps at participating shops as well as motels, restaurants and visitor centers. For more details, visit the CCA website and click on the 2nd Saturday button on the home page. May artists include painters, basket-makers, bead-makers, a quilter, a potter, a carver/woodworker, photographers, jewelers, a soap-maker, and local musicians. Wine, Cheese & More features wines from South Africa and many shops provide light snacks for visitors. Prior to the Art Stroll, the CCA will host Wetlands on Wheels from 10:00am – 4:00pm in Robert Reed Park. Wetlands on Wheels is a mobile classroom with interactive exhibits on wetland issues plus crafts, games and more. A native plant sale will take place on the grounds outside the classroom. From 3:00 – 5:00pm at the Oyster and Maritime Museum, there will be a book signing and author talk on the History of Lightships by Wayne Kirklin. Music at the Dock On Saturday, May 17, bring your blanket and beach chair to Robert Reed Park on at 4:00pm to celebrate Armed Forces Day with a FREE concert by Valor Brass. The performers of Valor Brass are members of the "The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band and will entertain you with trumpets, horns, trombone and tuba. Robert Wise Film Festival Few American film directors can compare to the breadth and success of Robert Wise. From West Side Story to Odds Against Tomorrow to The Body Snatcher to The Day the Earth Stood Still, Wise directed a series of legendary films in a variety of genres. The CCA Robert Wise Film Festival kicks off May 24 at 7:00pm with a talk by Richard Keenan, an expert on the works of Robert Wise, followed by a showing of Odds Against Tomorrow. The Festival continues through June 27 and includes a total of seven films to be shown at the Chincoteague Senior Center on Church Street. This is a ticketed event and tickets can be purchased online via the CCA website or in person at Egret Moon Artworks, Sundial Books, Island Cottage Collection, Psychotronic Store or H & H Pharmacy. Check the CCA website for complete details. Spring Acoustic Concert Series The final concert in the CCA Acoustic Concert Series takes place on Saturday, May 31. Husband-and-wife team Sparky and Rhonda Rucker bring their collection of Old-time Blues, Appalachian and Civil War music, slave songs and ballads to Chincoteague. The concert takes place at 7:30pm at the Chincoteague Senior Center. Get your tickets early! Seating in the Senior Center is limited and the audience is growing. Advance tickets are available online via the CCA website or at Egret Moon Artworks, Sundial Books, Psychotronic Store, Island Cottage Collection or H & H Pharmacy. Coming in June Mark you calendars for the following events: ? At 2 pm on June 7, CCA presents a Chamber Music Concert by the Attaca (string) Quartet, Silver Medal winners of the Third International Chesapeake Chamber Music Competition. The concert takes place at the Island Roxy, with tickets available online, in selected shops and at the door. ? The Robert Wise Film Festival continues with film showings on June 13, 20 and 27 at the Chincoteague Senior Center ? Saturday, June 14 brings the 2nd Saturday Art Stroll and a Music at the Dock concert by the Bill Williams Jazz Ensemble ? On June 21, CCA hosts the first Water Heritage Festival in Robert Reed Park, a community celebration of living and working on the water. ? Saturday, June 28, rounds out the month with Music at the Dock, featuring a concert by the Eastern Shore Orchestra in Robert Reed Park.
