Accomac Roots

AccomacRoots exists to serve as a resource for researching the genealogy of African American families on Chincoteague Island, Accomac County, Virginia (CI). From 1810 to 1850, free blacks and slaves comprised 40 to 50% of the population of the county. Comparatively very little has been written or compiled about those families and AccomacRoots was established to explore this significant part of our history.

Chincoteague Chamber

The Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce houses the Visitor Center for the Island and is located inside the traffic circle on Maddox Blvd. (Beach Rd.).  Visit the Center for maps, brochures, booklets, etc. about Island services and activities.

Chincoteague Island Library

The Chincoteague Island Library is a small, privately supported, free library that serves residents of Chincoteague Island and Northern Accomack County as well as many seasonal visitors. The Library's mission is to promote reading, a love of books,  literacy, and preserve the history of Chincoteague and Assateague Islands.

Chincoteague Natural History Association

The Chincoteague Natural History Association (CNHA) is a non-profit, cooperating association established in partnership with the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  The purpose of the CNHA is to promote a better understanding and appreciation of the Chincoteague refuge, the Eastern Shore of Virginia refuge, and the natural history and environment of Virginia's Eastern Shore in general.  The CNHA produces and provides interpretive and educational material for refuge visitors.  Proceeds from memberships and items sold in the gift shops are used to support and enhance interpretive programs, projects, and activities at both of the refuges.
 

Chincoteague Outlook

Chincoteague Outlook is Chincoteague Island's only ongoing blog and video website that features the creative photography, video interviews and stories to help visitors and locals find all that is fun and unique in Chincoteague Virginia. Island Bluegrass Alliance

The Purpose of Island Bluegrass Alliance is to promote Bluegrass Music on the Eastern Shore by holding concerts throughout the year featuring quality bluegrass bands.  They ty to make the concerts more than just a band playing music by giving door prizes, adding special effects and making everyone feel at home.

Museum of Chincoteague Island

The Museum of Chincoteague Island, a non-profit educational institution, is located on Maddox Blvd just before the entrance to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Founded in 1965 by a group of Island women, the museum opened in 1972 and was expanded in 1996. The museum tells the story of Island history and of the oystering and seafood business which was the major industry of the island.
