Here is what we enjoyed in November

Opening Acts: Young Chincoteague musicians and Shakey Birdwell, itinerant blues guitarist

Born and raised in Pomona, a crossing in Rockland County, New York, Shakey Birdwell spent summers in Texas and Louisiana as a child. He took up guitar as a student in a college he chose because he'd "never been that far West before."  He spent years in California and Oregon, where his trail has now gone almost cold. He moved to the nation's capitol, still thinking he could change the world.  He emerged some years later, disappointed.  Shakey has no fixed address, and his location is sometimes hard to track.  But he is known to spend time with his travellling companion, Brooks Yeager, and Brook's lovely wife Cindy, who live part-time on Chincoteague.

Alex&Shiloh to Perform at Chincoteague Island CoffeehouseHeadliner: alex & shiloh

"Combine an acoustic guitar, off-the-chart vocals, a bottomless repertoire of cover songs, borderline excessive amounts of sibling love, and a catalog of memorable original compositions, toss, and you’ve got alex & shiloh.”
As kids, Alex & Shiloh had a penchant for stealing the spotlight from their professional musician parents as often as possible. Whether in California, where it all began, or Salisbury, Maryland, where they eventually landed, left, and returned, the brother/sister duo was constantly surrounded by music. The pair began writing music together in high school, with Shiloh penning most of the lyrics and Alex contributing the bulk of the musical arrangements. Shiloh, who is rumored to have sung rather than spoken her first word, is the duo’s voice, with Alex contributing seamless harmonies and the frequent lead vocal. Alex, whose guitar is attached with the permanence of an extra limb, supplies the acoustic accompaniment in all of the pair’s work. With 13 years of classical and operatic voice training, Shiloh is poised to think outside the limits of the pop music box and push her vocals to the next level. Alex, a classically trained trumpet player, hasn’t yet met an instrument he doesn’t like (or couldn’t play), and consistently looks for ways to expand the duo’s sound with the addition of banjo, piano, harmonica and the like.

Visual Artist: Matt Smith
Matthew Smith is an Illustrator with a graphic design and 3D animation background. After graduating from Marshall University in 2011 he moved to Washington, DC and worked various day jobs while making art in all his free time. This November marks one year that he dedicated 100% of his creative energy to being an illustrator and 6 months of living in Chincoteague. His favorite materials are markers, watercolor, india ink, and most recently solvent transfers.
