Encourage a local student-artist! The Chincoteague Cultural Alliance awards three scholarships annually to Chincoteague High School graduates who demonstrate artistic talent. The scholarships are awarded to students who excell in visual arts, drama and music. Funds to support the scholarships are raised annually through collection cans/tip jars in various CCA member ships, at CCA events and through the sales of the pony pins. Thanks to the support from donors in 2007, three scholarships of $500 each were awarded at the 2008 graduation ceremony.
Jim Warren, a local jeweler and metalsmith from Parksley, VA, designs and makes the pins. The 2008 pin is the second in the series and is a gold-plated design.
Pony Pins can be purchased in various shops on Chincoteague Island for $10 each, including Island Cottage Collection, Wine, Cheese & More, Sundial Books, Island Butterfly, Island Arts, Vintage Rose Antiques and Egret Moon Artworks. They can also be ordered online for $14, which includes shipping and handling.
