This 1987 Oscar winner, taken from an Isak Dinesen story, is set in the second half of the 19th century on Denmark’s remote Jutland coast, in a small fishing village. Two sisters, dedicated to their father and his church, turn down their suitors to care for him. Thirty-five years later, Babette, a French refugee seeking help, appeals to the sisters who take her in. To commemorate what would have been their father’s 100th birthday, Babette prepares a spectacular feast, the preparation and execution of which reveals Babette’s secrete and the nature of her sustaining glory.
